As the population of the Colony is steadily increasing, a portion of the former Refugee Camp at North Point is being reconstructed so as to relieve the pressure on the Chinese Hospitals. It is expected that close on 400 patients of the more chronic

ype and those suffering from deficiency diseases could be treated there.

The Administration has also assumed financial responsibility for the Chinese Public Dispensaries and it is proposed to expand the work of these institutions by providing for ante-natal and Infant Welfare work to be undertaken.

St. John Ambulance Association & Brigade

The Administration has arranged to take over the work of the St. John Ambulance organisation in so far as Rural Dispensaries and Maternity Homes are concerned. able premises are being sought for this purpose.

Suit-

As a temporary measure the Administration has assumed responsibility for the Haw Par Hospital on Cheung Chow Island until the St. John Amb. organisation in Hong Kong is reorganised and in a position to finance this hospital.

Bacteriological Institutes.

Dr. K.T. Loke is acting as Pathologist, as Dr. A.V. Greaves has not yet arrived in the Colony.

The Institution in Victoria was as such throughout the occupation and, consequently this building was intact, although in need of repairs. Some equipment had been removed from the Institute but sufficient equipment, chemicals and stains remained to do rou- tine examinations for hospitals and clinics.

Another Institute was set up in Kowloon by the Japanese and the layout, equip- ment, etc., are considered very suitable for the purpose. Prior to the Pacific War plans had been prepared for the construction of a Pathological (& Bacteriological) Laboratory in Kowloon and the present Institute, although on a less ambitious scale, has proved most useful, especially now that transport is so inadequate.

The work of both Institutes has been steadily increasing although, so far, no vaccines or sera have been prepared locally.

In addition to clinical pathological and bacteriological investigations on materials submitted by hospitals, clinics and practitioners, much work has been carried out in connection with samples of water, milk, etc., submitted by the Health Section, Water Authority etc.

The experimental animals, with few exceptions, died from malnutrition or other causes during the occupation.

Government Laboratory

Reorganisation. As usual, all equipment and stores were left in a very dirty and chaotic state and Major Symons is to be complimented on his energy and initiative in restoring order and testing and identifying various chemicals etc.

Analyses etc. The work of the Laboratory has steadily increased. 105 samples of waters, waterworks chemicals, foodstuffs, wines and spirits and other naturals have been analysed in addition to forensic and toxicological examinations.

Other Work. A Field Method for the estimation of free fatty acids in Peanut Oil has been evolved for the use of the Supplies Branch. A number of chloroscopes have been produced for the Forces and the Waterworks Dept.

Advisory & Liaison. Much valuable advice has been given to other Branches.

Additional Staff is urgently required to cope with the ever increasing work.
